The most remarkable thing about living in Kårhamn is enjoying the changing seasons and the special light. In winter it is pitch black outside at one o’clock pm, although the bright white snow gives a lighter feeling. There are no cars in Kårhamn, so the only light sources are the lamp posts and the warm shine from the windows of the houses. On almost every clear evening the northern lights perform their spectacular show, and if it is a full moon as well it gets so bright our bodies cast long shadows on the snow. The mountains surrounding Kårhamn gives perfect shelter for the little bay, but also keeps the sun out for almost 4 months from October until February. By February we are all keen to get some sunlight in our faces and scramble up the hill to see the sun.
Before we know it it is May and the midnight sun is up, and suddenly the day is bright for 24 hours. In Kårhamn the sun goes behind a hill from about midnight until 2 o’clock a.m., when the sun shines beautifully directly into our bay. This truly has caused some sleep problems for our co-workers from abroad! But on these sunny evenings we can enjoy the sound of the elderly fishermen playing accordions sitting on their staircases outside, the music flowing easily across the bay to the fish plant.
